Barbie film production causes global pink paint shortage

other · 2026-04-27

Greta Gerwig's upcoming 'Barbie' film, set for release on July 21, 2023, used so much pink paint that it depleted the global supply of a single company and contributed to a worldwide shortage. Production designer Sarah Greenwood revealed in an interview with Architectural Digest that the film consumed all available stock from Rosco, the paint supplier. Rosco's vice president of global marketing, Lauren Proud, confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that the film used all their paint, but noted that broader supply chain issues from the pandemic and extreme weather in Texas in early 2021 also played a role. The film was shot primarily at Warner Bros Studios in Leavesden, UK. Gerwig insisted on bright, overwhelming pinks to capture the childhood essence of Barbie, drawing inspiration from Wayne Thiebaud's pop paintings, Richard Neutra's Kaufmann House in Palm Springs, Tim Burton's 'Pee-wee's Big Adventure', and the Gene Kelly film 'An American in Paris'. The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken.
