Barbie at 65: Design Museum London Hosts Major Retrospective
The Design Museum in London has opened a major exhibition celebrating Barbie's 65th anniversary, running until February 23, 2025. Curated by Danielle Thom and designed by Sam Jacob Studio, the show features over 250 objects from Mattel's Los Angeles archives, including 180 dolls and clothing sketches. Highlights include the rare 1959 Number 1 Barbie (hand-painted, black-and-white swimsuit), a 1968 talking Barbie, and the doll that spent six months on the International Space Station with astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti. The exhibition traces Barbie's evolution from a 1959 debut to a global cultural icon, examining its relationship with design, fashion, and societal shifts. Sections cover Barbie's friends (Ken, introduced in 1961; sister Skipper), Dreamhouse (1962), vehicles, and the 2016 Fashionistas line embracing diversity (African American, Hispanic, Asian, dolls with Down syndrome, wheelchair users, curvy bodies). The show also explores materials and technological innovation, including interactive comparisons of original and contemporary Barbie internal structures. A final section highlights Barbie's influence on fashion, design, art, and film. The Guardian described it as "a riot of pink that makes you think. Fun, glossy, nostalgic, perfect for escapism." The museum chose a restrained use of pink, favoring a "rainbow and ironic" installation. After London, the exhibition will tour internationally.
