Barbican Centre Launches Competition for Bespoke Furniture Ahead of 50th Anniversary

The Barbican Centre in London has launched a design competition for custom furniture tailored to its Brutalist structure, coinciding with a significant renovation spearheaded by Allies and Morrison, Asif Khan Studio, Buro Happold, and Harris Bugg Studio. This retrofit-first project, aimed at the venue's 50th anniversary in 2032, will introduce advanced mechanical systems, enhanced glazing and doors, LED lighting, rainwater harvesting, and material reuse. Running from late 2026 to 2029, the furniture initiative will create a strategy for up to 500 items, including armchairs, sofas, and event chairs, prioritizing accessibility, flexibility, and sustainability. Submissions are due by August 28, with a shortlist announced in September and the winner revealed in November. Robin Day originally designed the Barbican's furniture, featuring modular outdoor seating and colorful auditorium chairs.
