Barbara Hammer's Evidentiary Bodies exhibition at Leslie-Lohman Museum explores queer cinema pioneer's decades of work

The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art showcases Barbara Hammer: Evidentiary Bodies from October 7, 2017, to January 28, 2018. Curated by Staci Bu Shea and Carmel Curtis, this diverse exhibition features a retrospective from the 1960s to the present, alongside performances, film screenings, and related shows. Born in Hollywood, California, in 1939, Hammer has produced over 80 films that tackle themes of lesbian sexuality, political injustice, and cancer. The display includes archival materials, previously unseen films, videos, paintings, and installations. Hammer, who discussed her work in a 2017 interview at her Westbeth studio, has her archives alongside Georgia O'Keeffe's letters at Yale. Notable works include her 1978 film Double Strength and the 1994 sculpture Cancer Bones.
