Barbara Crane retrospective at Centre Pompidou reveals photographer's experimental range

exhibition · 2026-04-19

Centre Pompidou in Paris is presenting a retrospective exhibition of American photographer Barbara Crane (1928-2019) until 6 January. The show traces her career from 1964 onward, highlighting her constant reinvention across multiple styles and techniques. Early works include a series of close-up portraits from 1964 featuring department store visitors overlaid with abstract motifs and double exposures of neon signs. Crane's 1970s output includes conventional street photography alongside experimental projects like Whole Roll (1974-1978), a darkroom exploration, and Baxter Labs (1974-1976), which manipulates abstract graphic forms. Between 1976 and 1978, she created the Loop series using a 5×7 inch view camera mounted on a modified golf bag to document light interactions with façades in a historic Chicago neighborhood. In the 1980s, she produced rapid-fire images of anonymous individuals for her Private Views series, capturing intimate gestures from extremely close distances. The exhibition showcases her movement between documentary approaches and formal experimentation throughout her career. Crane received her first camera, a twin-lens Kodak Reflex, as a birthday gift from her parents in 1947. Her work encompasses diverse subjects from Chicago windowpanes to attendees at Alabama's Maricopa County Fair. The retrospective positions Crane as a significant 20th century photographic innovator whose practice consistently evolved.
