Barb Choit's Fade Diary exhibition critiques outdated glamour through faded storefront photography

exhibition · 2026-04-20

In 2012, Barb Choit presented her exhibition Fade Diary, which featured photographs capturing the essence of worn posters and advertisements found in New York City’s shop windows, particularly in Brooklyn’s Bushwick and Greenpoint neighborhoods. Her works, including Barbershop Fade #8, #1, and #2, showcased gridded images of outdated male hairstyles from the late 1980s. Choit’s photographs also depicted reflections through shop windows, merging outside views with interior advertisements. Among her notable pieces were Faded Object #1 (With Bleach Alternative) and the Untitled Faded Beauty series. A neon sign stating '12 Photos & Fades' adorned the gallery window. Influenced by Eugène Atget, the exhibition faced criticism for its lack of commentary on gentrification and was reviewed in ArtReview's January & February 2013 edition.
