Banksy Exhibition in Volterra Reviewed by Local Art Students

Students from Liceo Artistico di Volterra visited the Banksy exhibition 'Realismo Capitalista' at Centro Studi Espositivo Santa Maria Maddalena in Volterra, Italy. The show spans two rooms: one featuring works by Banksy alongside pieces by Shepard Fairey, Blu, and Ben Eine; the other screening a video of Banksy creating graffiti and referencing Dismaland. The exhibition is set in Volterra, a historic town in Pisa province known for Etruscan walls, medieval architecture, and alabaster craftsmanship. Students questioned the show's title, noting the irony of paying to see street art typically free in public spaces. They highlighted works addressing social issues: 'Queen Vic' critiques homophobia through Queen Victoria; 'Flower Thrower' (first appeared in 2003 on the Israeli-Palestinian wall) promotes peace; 'CND Soldiers' shows soldiers painting a peace symbol. A classroom discussion on 'Virgin Mary' depicting Mary offering poisoned milk to baby Jesus sparked interpretations about religion's toxic role or harmful family dynamics. The exhibition was part of a civic education program, followed by a session on Oreste Nannetti, an Art Brut artist who carved into walls of Volterra's psychiatric hospital using his belt buckle. Students drew parallels between Banksy and Nannetti, both using walls as canvases to challenge norms and convey social messages.
