Balmuda's Pocket Watch-Inspired Clock Uses Light and Sound to Evoke Time's Passage
Japanese company Balmuda has introduced The Clock, a pocket watch-shaped device designed to convey the experience of time rather than simply display it. The product features a Light Hour system that uses illumination instead of traditional hands, with light moving slowly across the face in a pendulum-like arc. This design was inspired by the Foucault pendulum at Tokyo's National Museum of Nature and Science. The Clock is machined from solid aluminum, weighs 200 grams, charges via USB-C, and includes a cloth carrying bag for portability. It offers three main functions: a Relax Time mode that plays seven original sound recordings like rain and fireplace sounds for three minutes before alarms, a focus timer with white noise, and the Light Hour display. All functions are controlled through the Balmuda Connect app via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Founder Gen Terao developed the concept from his personal habit of using rain sounds for sleep, seeking a device that produces sound without emitting disruptive light. The Clock is intended to occupy personal time spaces like nightstands, encouraging users to perceive time's gradual progression.
