BalletBoyz at 25: Male Dance Stigma Persists Despite Progress

BalletBoyz, founded by former Royal Ballet dancers William Trevitt and Michael Nunn, celebrates its 25th anniversary with a tour titled 'Still Pointless: BalletBoyz at 25' at Sadler's Wells, London (12-16 May) and touring to 11 July. Despite cultural shifts since the 'Billy Elliot effect' in 2000, stigma against boys dancing remains. The company has expanded from two to ten male dancers, commissioning repertoire exploring 'two matching energies.' While Royal Ballet School applications from boys rose 227% pre-Covid, numbers have dropped post-pandemic. Dance education in UK schools has declined sharply—GCSE dance entrants down 60% since 2008, A-level halved. BalletBoyz ran school workshops for 15 years until Covid. Kevin Young, now a Royal Academy of Dance teacher, notes stigma is 'quieter' but not gone; a student refused to perform a Bob Fosse piece fearing his father's reaction. Layton Williams, former Billy Elliot and Strictly runner-up, says dance is 'cool' now but acknowledges varied expressions of masculinity. Ashley Banjo of Diversity, who won Britain's Got Talent in 2009, credits social media for reducing stigma, with TikTok and Instagram creators normalizing male dance. Strictly Come Dancing, which once refused a same-sex tango from BalletBoyz in 2007, now features male-male partnerships.
