Balich Wonder Studio's immersive video mapping transforms Bologna basilicas
Balich Wonder Studio (BWS), an Italian company specializing in large-scale immersive events, recently projected video mappings onto the facades of Bologna's Basilica of San Domenico and Basilica of Santo Stefano. The projections, part of the Open Art series, celebrated the 100th anniversary of G.D, a Bologna-based high-tech packaging machinery leader. One projection displayed artworks from inside the churches, while the other featured pieces from four Bologna museums: Pinacoteca, MAMbo, Museo Morandi, and Museo universitario di Palazzo Poggi. BWS, which holds the world record for Olympic show production, has also created events for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the 2019 and 2023 Pan American Games in Peru and Chile, the 2016 Rio Olympics, and the 2014 Sochi Olympics, as well as luxury brand events for Louis Vuitton, Formula 1, Dolce & Gabbana, and Bulgari. The studio's creative approach involves total immersion in the host country's culture, as seen with the Tree of Life at Expo 2015 Milan and the augmented Last Judgment in 2018. BWS emphasizes emotion and wonder as universal languages. This year, majority ownership was acquired by Banijay, a global media content leader. The team of over 280 people from 20 countries is led by founders Marco Balich, Gianmaria Serra, and Simone Merico, CEO Stefano Core, and luxury partners Carolina Dotti and Valentina Saluzzi.
