Balenciaga's Digital Show and Paolo Carzana's Sustainable Debut at London Fashion Week
Balenciaga presented its Spring/Summer 2022 collection digitally on June 8, 2021, featuring 44 outfits modeled by a single virtual avatar created through photogrammetry, face scanning, planar tracking, rotoscoping, machine learning, and 3D modeling. The show, designed by Demna Gvasalia, included an 'Hacker Project' co-branding with Gucci, both owned by Kering, where classic Gucci bag shapes appeared with double B logos instead of GG. At London Fashion Week, Paolo Carzana (born 1995) debuted his first fully digital collection for his label Auroboros, followed by a solo presentation of 18 handcrafted outfits made from foraged materials dyed with natural pigments like madder root, raspberries, strawberries, turmeric, logwood, and lavender. Carzana, a vegan who uses bamboo silk, organic cotton, pineapple leather, and antique tapestries, replaces zippers and buttons with ribbons and knots. His designs expose the chest to symbolize vulnerability. Recognized at Westminster University in 2018 for his dramatic, vegan, and organic approach, he won a scholarship to Central Saint Martins for his commitment to sustainable practices. Carzana identifies primarily as Welsh and draws inspiration from Wales.
