Balaklava Odyssey Festival Transforms Secret Soviet Nuclear Bunker into Art Venue

festival-fair · 2026-04-19

In August 2006, the Balaklava Odyssey festival converted a former Soviet nuclear submarine base in Balaklava, Ukraine, into an artistic hub. This event utilized "Object 825," a Cold War-era bunker, to feature works from artists and filmmakers hailing from nine different nations across multiple artistic forms. The festival sought to provide a cultural contrast to the military history of the location. Art was exhibited along a 1.5-kilometer underground corridor, which now serves as a museum. Key contributors included the DS-X.org collective, Romanian artists Alexander Grigorias and Levana German, and the Kiev-based group RES. The site, built in the 1950s, had been left abandoned following the Soviet Union's dissolution in 1991. Curators Sebastian Kaiser and Roman Markholia also created a nominated documentary.
