BAFTA-Winning Crime Drama 'Happy Valley' Streams on Arte

The BAFTA-winning British crime drama 'Happy Valley' will be available for streaming in the Arte Mediathek from May 28. The series centers on Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire), who is still grappling with her daughter's suicide when she learns that Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton), the man she believes raped her daughter, has been released from prison. Catherine is determined to put him back behind bars after discovering his involvement in a kidnapping. The show also explores the drug problem in the small town of Halifax and Catherine's fractured family. The narrative alternates between Catherine's perspective and that of the kidnappers, creating a cat-and-mouse dynamic. Supporting characters include Catherine's grandson Ryan, who doesn't know Royce is his father, and Kevin (Steve Pemberton), a disrespected employee who turns to a criminal friend to kidnap his boss's daughter for ransom. The series has won multiple BAFTA Television Awards, with Lancashire earning Best Leading Actress for her portrayal of the complex sergeant.
