Azimuts 36: A 20-Year Anthology of Design Research

publication · 2026-04-23

The journal Azimuts marks its 20th anniversary with a bilingual, nearly 500-page book anthology. Originally conceived by Jacques Bonnaval, then director of the École des beaux-arts de Saint-Étienne, as 'research and industrial creation notebooks,' the journal emerged from the post-graduate design program founded at the school in 1989, two years before the first issue. This anthology, true to its roots, was compiled by students of the 2010-2011 post-graduate cohort under new editors-in-chief Marc Monjou and Claire Fayolle. It selects texts and interviews from the first 35 issues, predominantly theoretical in tone, reflecting a dual commitment to research and creation. The contents are organized into four chapters: 'Ethics and Design,' 'Design and Environment,' 'Networks and Contributions,' and 'Research and Process,' featuring about thirty authors mainly from design, science, and humanities, including Pierre Damien-Huyghe, Enzo Mari, the studio Dunne & Raby, Lucius Burckhardt, Augustin Berque, Catherine Geel, and Bernard Stiegler. For completeness, the issue also includes reviews of exhibitions and conferences from the 2010 Biennale Internationale de Design de Saint-Étienne, comprehensive indexes of authors, tables of contents, typographers of previous issues, and a list of former post-graduate students. The anthology was reviewed by Christophe Kihm.
