institutional · 2026-04-27

Chingiz Farzaliyev, the director of the Azerbaijan National Museum of Art, reflects on the institution's journey since its establishment in 1924. Initially part of the Department of Arts, it launched its permanent exhibition on May 6, 1937. The museum has occupied various locations, including a palace constructed by N. A. von der Nonne (1887-1895) and a larger edifice designed by M. D. Botov (1883-1887), with a relocation occurring in 1992. In 2013, the two buildings were unified. The museum's collection boasts around 19,000 art pieces, showcasing national art in one building and works from European, Russian, Iranian, Turkish, and Japanese artists in the other. Following independence, it became a member of ICOM and emphasizes national heritage. Future initiatives include new publications and a significant exhibition celebrating Heydar Aliyev's 100th birthday in 2023.
