Ayşe Erkmen's Institutional Critique Opens Dirimart's First London Gallery
Last month, Dirimart, a gallery based in Istanbul, inaugurated its first international branch in Mayfair, London, showcasing Turkish artist Ayşe Erkmen's exhibition titled 'I still insist'. The exhibition features seven pieces, including 21 wooden panels that have been part of previous displays at Dirimart's Dolapdere space. Erkmen's art critiques labor and institutional practices, and Levent Özmen, the director of the London gallery, chose her for her emphasis on construction conditions. Among the works is the 2017 sound installation 'Dolapdere', which addresses gentrification since the Arter museum's 2010 launch, along with a new film documenting urban streets from a vehicle. Founded in 2002, Dirimart seeks to present a varied roster of artists. The exhibition is open until 4 October, highlighting issues in both Istanbul and London.
