Aya Ben Ron to Represent Israel at 2019 Venice Biennale with Field Hospital X
Aya Ben Ron (Haifa, 1967) will represent Israel at the 58th Venice Biennale, running from May 11 to November 24, 2019. Her project, Field Hospital X (FHX), curated by Avi Lubin and produced by Miki Gov, transforms the Israeli Pavilion into a hospital where silent voices can be heard and social injustices made visible. FHX is a new itinerant international institution founded by Ben Ron, debuting in Venice. It features a video work 'No Body' addressing family abuse, a TV program explaining the hospital concept, Care-Areas, Care-Kits, and a Safe-Unit where visitors can learn to shout in a private space. Ben Ron, a multidisciplinary artist and lecturer at the University of Haifa and Hadassah Academic College Jerusalem, creates site-specific projects, installations, documentaries, and films, often collaborating with medical institutions. After Venice, FHX will travel to other cities, involving local and international artists. The 2019 Biennale is notably female-focused, with women artists representing Austria (Renate Bertlmann), Ireland (Eva Rothschild), UK (Cathy Wilkes), France (Laure Prouvost), Scotland (Charlotte Prodger), Hong Kong (Shirley Tze), Italy (Chiara Fumai and Liliana Moro), Georgia (Anna K.E.), Taiwan (Shu Lea Cheang), Iceland (Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir/Shoplifter), Denmark (Larissa Sansour), Bosnia-Herzegovina (Danica Dakić), UAE (Nujoom Alghanem), Turkey (İnci Eviner), Pakistan (Naiza Khan), and Portugal (Leonor Antunes).
