Axis Mundi: Resonant Spire interactive tower for Burning Man 2026 translates collective voice into light
Sergei Konchekov has created Axis Mundi: Resonant Spire, a 12-meter tall interactive installation chosen for the 2026 Burning Man Honoraria program. Situated in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, this tower transforms human voices, sounds, and presence data into a dynamic display of light and sound. A network of microphones and sensors captures various inputs, which are then processed in real time and organized into roughly 300 vertically arranged circular modules. Instead of isolating individual signals, the system encourages interaction among them, allowing overlapping frequencies and amplitudes to coexist. As more participants engage, the density of signals changes, leading to a more continuous vertical light display. When signals align, the structure appears as a cohesive column of light; without alignment, it remains fragmented. The lower rings maintain stable conditions while the upper ones adapt responsively. This project is developed through COLLIZIUM, a methodology that integrates architectural design with conflict-driven computational processes and social engagement, building on research from Columbia GSAPP. Konchekov's work highlights the disconnection in modern signal environments, where vocal inputs are often filtered and disseminated without synthesis.
