AWI Launches Online Fee Calculator for Italian Art Workers
Art Workers Italia (AWI), an independent association founded in 2020 to advocate for contemporary art workers in Italy, has launched an online fee calculator to determine recommended minimum compensation for professional services in the sector. The tool, called the Calcolatore dei compensi, is a web application that helps users calculate minimum fees for single assignments or multiple tasks within a project. Users select the type of work, client category (large or medium institutions, non-profits), and in some cases the number of working days or whether artworks are new or previously exhibited. The calculator provides a net figure, excluding taxes, social contributions, travel, meals, and accommodation. AWI also offers a companion Guida ai compensi minimi raccomandati (Guide to Recommended Minimum Fees), updated to 2025, which includes a fee table, a best-practice checklist, and a glossary. A vademecum with guidelines for cultural institutions is still in development. The initiative aims to combat precarity and exploitation in Italy's contemporary art sector by providing transparent negotiation benchmarks.
