Averklub Collective's Manuš Means Human Exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien Examines Romani Representation

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From June 2 to September 5, Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna showcases "Manuš Means Human," an exhibition curated by the Averklub Collective, which consists of 13 members hailing from the Chanov housing estate in Most, Czech Republic. This exhibition explores various narratives surrounding Romani individuals and is divided into six thematic sections that cover topics such as labor, housing, the 1971 Romani Congress, language standardization, and representation. Featured works include sculptures like "A Portrait of George Soros" (2021) and artifacts from the Museum of Romani Culture in Brno. Additionally, a segment titled "The History of Art, without History and without Art" presents busts by Vincenc Makovský and Miloš Axman, while videos capture the experiences of poverty in Slovak Romani communities and their memories following socialism. The title is inspired by a 1986 book authored by Vincent Danihel.
