Avant-Garde Masterpieces from Philadelphia Museum of Art on View in Pisa

Palazzo Blu in Pisa presents 'LE AVANGUARDIE – Capolavori dal Philadelphia Museum of Art', featuring around fifty works from 1910 to 1940. The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, and video installations by artists such as Chagall, Dalí, Duchamp, Kandinsky, Miró, Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian, Klee, Ernst, and Gris. Curated by Matthew Affron of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the show coincides with the renovation of Palazzo Blu's spaces. The display opens with Picasso's 'Autoritratto' (1906) and traces the avant-garde movements—Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Abstraction—against a backdrop of political upheaval, including the Nazi condemnation of 'degenerate art' in 1937. Key works include Kandinsky's 'Cerchi nel cerchio' (1923), Ernst's 'La Foresta' (1923), Tanguy's 'Tempesta' (1926), Masson's 'Battaglia di galli' (1930), and Chagall's 'La Crocifissione' (1940), which replaces the traditional loincloth with a Jewish prayer shawl, referencing Nazi persecution. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, founded in 1876, was selected by Marcel Duchamp as the best North American museum for 20th-century art.
