Autumn 2017 Biennials: From Istanbul to Beijing

The autumn 2017 season offers a packed calendar of biennials worldwide. The 15th Istanbul Biennial, curated by artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset, opens September 15 at venues including Istanbul Modern and Pera Museum, featuring Monica Bonvicini. The 7th Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art, curated by Yuko Hasegawa, opens September 19 at the New Tretyakov Gallery with 52 artists from 25 countries, including Matthew Barney, Björk, and Olafur Eliasson. The Chicago Architecture Biennial, curated by Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, runs September 16 to December 31 at the Chicago Cultural Center, exploring the theme "Make New History" with 140 participants including Italian studios Baukuh, Fosbury Architecture, and artist Luisa Lambri. The 14th Biennale de Lyon, titled "Floating Worlds" and curated by Emma Lavigne, opens September 20 at multiple venues, featuring Italian artists Dadamaino, Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Paolo Scheggi, and Anna Maria Maiolino. The 7th Beijing International Art Biennale, themed "The Silk Road and World's Civilizations," runs September 24 to October 15 at the National Art Museum of China, with works by Italian old masters Tintoretto, Luca Giordano, and others. Performa 17, the New York performance biennial founded by RoseLee Goldberg, takes place November 1-19, honoring Dada with performances by Yto Barrada, William Kentridge, Julie Mehretu, and Jason Moran.
