Autonomous Key: A $9 NFC Device to Physically Lock Distracting Apps

Autonomous has introduced a $9 NFC key designed to physically lock distracting apps on smartphones, offering a novel alternative to software-based screen-time tools. Unlike traditional apps that rely on willpower, this device requires users to scan a physical key to unlock apps like Instagram or TikTok for up to 60 minutes before they automatically re-lock. The key can be left in another room or at the office to add friction to impulsive usage. It is significantly cheaper than competitors such as Blok ($29), Unpluq ($26.50), and Brick ($59), though Brick offers additional features like Sleep Mode and in-app purchase blocking. The key is compact, about 3 inches long, and compatible with Android 8.0+ and iOS 15+. The companion app provides AI-powered insights with a sassy personality, tracking unlock frequency and suggesting better placement of the key. There are no subscriptions or premium tiers, and one key can pair with multiple phones. However, during testing, NFC scans sometimes required multiple attempts, making it less ideal for essential apps. If the key is lost, users can uninstall/reinstall the app or remove the key from their account, with a backup unlock method in development. Currently in beta after a Kickstarter campaign, it began shipping earlier this month in five colors: pink, orange, blue, gray, and brown. The product was originally reported on July 27, 2026.
