Austrian man on trial for plotting jihadist attack on Taylor Swift concert in Vienna
In Wiener Neustadt, south of Vienna, a 21-year-old Austrian man known as Beran A is currently on trial for allegedly plotting a jihadist attack on a Taylor Swift concert scheduled for August 2024. His arrest, prompted by a CIA tip-off just prior to Swift's opening performance, resulted in the cancellation of three sold-out shows at Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium, which were anticipated to attract over 195,000 fans. Facing multiple charges, including terrorism and membership in a terrorist organization, Beran A reportedly sought online instructions to create a shrapnel bomb using TATP, linked to IS attacks, and received training from IS affiliates. He began his planning by July 21, 2024, and was apprehended on August 7. Alongside him is Arda K, also 21, accused of being part of the same IS group and plotting attacks in Mecca, Istanbul, and Dubai. Beran A's attorney, Anna Mair, indicated a partial guilty plea. Both defendants could face up to 20 years in prison. A third individual, Mohammed A, a Syrian, received an 18-month suspended sentence in Germany for aiding in translating bomb-making instructions. Swift later remarked that the tour narrowly "dodged a massacre situation" due to the CIA's intervention. The trial is projected to last until late May.
