Australian designers reimagine the chair in playful new exhibition

exhibition · 2026-05-20

A Guardian photo essay showcases 15 innovative chairs by Australian designers, each reinterpreting the humble seat through diverse materials and concepts. Highlights include Chan Hung Hin's 'Steer,' made from bicycle handlebars; Adam Goodrum's 'Re-Stitch Low Chair,' a hinged stainless steel piece that folds flat; Kelly Thompson's 'Rest Up Buttercup,' with embroidered instructions on a velvet seat; Tim Meakins' 'Horse Chair,' a playground-material adult-sized chair; Ash Allen's 'Pillow Talk,' a galvanised steel illusion of a cushion; Barnabas Dean's 'FFF#1,' featuring a chunky steel grid and faux fur; Scotty Bemelen's 'Pleased to meet you…,' hand-carved Oregon timber with a brass rose referencing the Rolling Stones; Makushla Harper's 'Windsock Chair,' a nylon inflatable for travel; Richard Greenacre's 'Tufted Chair,' with ceramic tiles mimicking upholstery; Sandra Githinji's 'TURN,' made from reclaimed meranti timber; Foolscap and Alpha60's 'Stitch Chair,' with corset-inspired lacing; Lukas Fong's 'Framed by the Square…,' a convertible chair-table; Oliver Wilcox's 'Linenfold Chair,' using a medieval carving technique; Blaklash and Skeehan's 'Slate,' with a suspended leather seat; and Matthew Tambellini and Holly White's 'Frame Work No 4 Chair (AKA Ned Kelly),' featuring yakisugi finish. The exhibition was co-curated by Dale Hardiman and Tom Skeehan as part of '100 Chairs.'
