Australian Census to Count Designers Under New Dedicated Classification

institutional · 2026-08-10

On 11 August, Australia's census will, for the first time, recognize designers as a distinct professional category, including 92 roles under Minor Group 242 Design Professional. This new classification, which shifts away from the previous architecture categorization, covers graphic, industrial, interior, jewellery, fashion, multimedia, UI/UX, web, textile design, animators, VFX artists, and illustrators. Simone LeAmon, CEO of the Design Institute of Australia (DIA), described it as 'the first national benchmark of Australia's design workforce.' The design sector generates approximately $67.5 billion each year but has previously lacked precise workforce statistics. To promote self-identification among designers, the DIA initiated the 'Write Designer' campaign, showcasing projects like the Facett hearing aid and Lockheed Lounge.
