Australian Art Prizes: Fielding, Marchesi, Skelton, Lindeman, Haga, Berney-Gibson, Xiao Win Major Awards
A wave of major art prize announcements across Australia has celebrated both established and emerging artists. Robert Fielding won the $100,000 Hadley's Art Prize for landscape painting with his work 'Landscape' (2026), described by judge Judith Ryan AM as 'edgy, vibrant and painterly'. Fielding noted the win was '30 years in the making'. Berlin-based painter Karla Marchesi won the $50,000 Gold Award at Rockhampton Museum of Art, selected by judge Jenny Watson for her oil painting 'Wasted Waiting' (2025). Amelia Skelton received the $30,000 NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging), coordinated by Artspace and Create NSW. Michael Lindeman won the $25,000 Abbotsleigh Grace Cossington Smith Art Award for his text-based painting. Akie Haga's glass crown 'Soft Echo' (2025) won the $5,000 people's choice award in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize. Fergus Berney-Gibson won the $15,000 Waverley Art Prize for 'As if I would be proud of you'. Huiyi Xiao won the $40,000 Churchie Emerging Art Prize for her video work 'The Fire That Wouldn't Call Itself Ash'. Other milestones include Aunty Lola Greeno's 80th birthday exhibition, Cherine Fahd's portraits of NRLW captains, CJ Taylor's inaugural Multichannel Commission, and Monica Rani Rudhar's public artwork. The Sydney Contemporary art fair announced its Installations section artists, including Mike Hewson, Jemima Wyman, and Reko Rennie.
