Austin Young paints rainbow dome in Cosenza church

artist · 2026-04-26

Austin Young of the Fallen Fruit collective has created a permanent artwork, 'La (S)VOLTA buona, La Vision di Pietro', on the dome of Sant'Aniello Abate church in Cosenza, Italy. Commissioned by parish priest Don Salvatore, the piece depicts Saint Peter's vision from Acts 10 with a psychedelic, rainbow-colored background incorporating the Rainbow Flag. The work aims to welcome all community members regardless of origin, gender, or social status. Young, who had never worked on a church dome before, employed strategies similar to his Venice installation 'Marriage of the Sea', using allegory to update the sacred episode. Local community members assisted with technical challenges, including creating a false ceiling and mapping the dome's complex angles. The artwork features a prominent pear at its center, symbolically replacing the apple and its associated original sin. The piece was completed in 2024.
