Aurora Arquitectos renovates 137m² Lisbon apartment in historic 'rabo de bacalao' building

architecture-design · 2026-04-17

In 2025, Aurora Arquitectos completed a renovation of a 137-square-meter apartment housed in a distinctive 'rabo de bacalao' building in Lisbon. This architectural style, which developed as the city expanded in the late 20th century, features elegant reinforced concrete slabs set against strong masonry walls that form a stabilizing grid. Before the renovation, the apartment was well-preserved. The project was led by architects Sérgio Antunes and Sofia Couto, alongside a team that included Carolina Rocha, Afonso Nunes, and others. General construction was handled by Beelt, with civil engineering support from Prodetail. Francisco Nogueira documented the finished work, highlighting how sunlight interacts with the living spaces.
