Aurelio Amendola: The Photographer Who Captured Art's Giants

artist · 2026-04-27

Aurelio Amendola, an esteemed Italian art photographer, was born in Pistoia in 1938. He initially ventured into street photography during the 1960s, but his passion for art was ignited by a 1964 visit to a Marino Marini exhibition. In 1968, he released his inaugural book focused on Giovanni Pisano's pulpit and started working with Marini. Amendola is known for utilizing natural light, allowing artists to express themselves freely, with the exception of Andy Warhol. He captured images of Giorgio de Chirico in Venice in 1973 and Henry Moore in 1972. In the 1980s, he recorded artworks at Fattoria di Celle. His book "Un occhio su Michelangelo" was published in 1995, and in 2007, he showcased Michelangelo's works at the Hermitage.
