August Sander's 'Men of the 20th Century' Published in Definitive Edition

publication · 2026-04-23

Éditions de La Martinière has unveiled an impressive new version of August Sander's 'Men of the 20th Century,' which includes seven opulent volumes along with an additional volume featuring specialized texts. The initiative commenced in 1992 when Stadtsparkasse obtained Sander's archives, which contained original prints, 11,000 negatives, and notes. For almost a decade, Suzanne Lange, Gabriele Conrath-Scholl, and Gerd Sander meticulously examined the materials. Their goal was to revitalize 'Men of the 20th Century' in honor of Sander's 125th birthday in 2002. This edition showcases 619 photographs and reconstructs Sander's seven planned groups, supplemented by historians' insights on his artistic style and impact. Sander's work, influenced by the Neue Sachlichkeit movement, sought objective representation, and the edition is affordably priced.
