Aubrey Levinthal's Tupperware Paintings Explore Domestic Drift at Edinburgh Exhibition

Philadelphia-based painter Aubrey Levinthal presents her largest UK exhibition to date, 'Mirror Matter,' at Ingleby Gallery in Edinburgh from 28 June to 13 September 2025. The show features hazy, diaristic works documenting the unexceptional routines of a working artist's life, with recurring motifs like Tupperware containers, red striped socks, cables, and transparent materials. Levinthal employs dry, scratchy textures on panel, using oils thinned with solvents and scraped with blades to create wonky, multipoint perspectives that give paintings a playful angularity. Figures with enlarged eyes and hands stare blankly ahead in cool, melancholic palettes dominated by pale pinks and greyish greens, punctuated by bursts of saturated color. Everyday scenes—lunch breaks, school runs, housework—are rendered with existential ambivalence, particularly regarding work and motherhood. In 'Couch (Three Boys)' (2025), three kids huddle under a blanket absorbed by a screen, their faces lit by a purple projection. The exhibition includes works like 'Studio desk' (2025), 'Sink Stomach' (2025), 'Lunch break' (2025), 'Worry Woman' (2025), 'Laps around the square' (2024), 'Descending Subway (Stairs)' (2025), and 'Drop-Off Women' (2025), where objects and perspectives blur domestic and administrative labor. Levinthal's paintings capture moments when attention drifts, using slippery, translucent forms to zone in on the present.
