Attenborough's 1978 gorilla encounter revisited in new BBC documentary

Ahead of his 100th birthday on 8 May, two new documentaries reflect on Sir David Attenborough's legendary 1978 meeting with mountain gorillas in Rwanda, originally filmed for the BBC series Life on Earth. This historic footage, recorded in the Virunga Mountains, showcased Attenborough's interaction with baby gorillas Pablo and Poppy, facilitated by primatologist Dian Fossey, who established the Karisoke Research Centre in Volcanoes National Park. This brief encounter, lasting just a minute or two, became a pivotal television moment, captivating around 500 million viewers and inspiring the Mountain Gorilla Project by Flora and Fauna. Although Fossey was murdered in 1985, her efforts helped the gorilla population rise from fewer than 285 to approximately 600. A Netflix documentary, A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough, explores Pablo's descendants and a power struggle among three adult males. Dr. Tara Stoinski from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund emphasizes the enduring significance of this encounter, highlighting the trust and similarities shared between humans and gorillas. The BBC documentary Making Life on Earth: Attenborough's Greatest Adventure is set to air on 3 May on BBC One.
