Athens Museum Offers Free Entry for Pet Owners on World Stray Animal Day

institutional · 2026-04-27

On April 2, World Stray Animal Day, the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST) will offer free admission to visitors accompanied by their pets. From 11:00 to 14:00, owners and their animals can explore the current exhibition 'Modern Love (or Love in the Age of Cold Intimacies)' and all other museum areas at no cost. The initiative, organized in collaboration with the Athens Municipality's Urban Fauna Department, supports Socrates Refuge, a temporary dog shelter founded in Athens in 2021 that promotes stray dog adoption and awareness. EMST's artistic director Katerina Gregos, in her role for about two years, has championed pet inclusion, allowing leashed animals in exhibitions under the condition that owners maintain hygiene. This pet-friendly policy aligns with a growing trend in Italian cultural venues such as Hangar Bicocca in Milan, the National Museum of Cinema in Turin, and Palazzo Madama, which accept small dogs. The event underscores a broader shift toward welcoming animals in cultural spaces.
