Aterballetto's '1 meter CLOSER' premieres on RAI 5 for International Dance Day
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Fondazione Nazionale della Danza / Aterballetto created '1 meter CLOSER', a 20-minute dance piece designed for remote viewing without relying on streaming or archival footage. Fifteen dancers, directed by choreographer Diego Tortelli and filmmaker Valeria Civardi, performed to original electronic music by Federico Bigonzetti. The dancers never met except for cohabiting couples, choreographing from their homes. The piece debuted on RAI 5 on April 29, 2020, International Dance Day. Tortelli commented that the difficult global moment forces a new form of emotionality and creativity, and that dancers confined at home can best convey how distance becomes a uniting bridge, transforming private spaces into a common horizon.
