Atelier Siyu transforms Shanghai lane house with curved curtain and modular furniture

Atelier Siyu has completed the Society of Home Workshop & Pop-up in Shanghai, using a curved curtain and modular furniture to reorganize a narrow lane house interior. The workshop occupies a 6.3-by-14-meter volume within a Shanghai Lilong dwelling, featuring timber roof trusses, aged steel-framed windows, and an enclosed courtyard. A curved curtain acts as the primary spatial interface, dividing the space into entry, reception, meeting, workspace, and storage areas. The modular furniture system combines off-the-shelf metal shelving with layered board surfaces, reconfigured to serve as workstations, storage, display units, and partitions. The three-day pop-up was installed in a separate location in Xuhui District, where existing furniture from Society of Home was reassembled into multifunctional spatial elements. The project blurs the line between use and exhibition, with the reconfiguration informing a transition toward a long-term retail environment. The design strategy emphasizes flexibility and budget control, working with existing architectural elements rather than introducing new structures.
