Atelier L's Origami Coffee Pavilion Opens in Beijing
At Taikoo Li Sanlitun in Beijing, Atelier L has unveiled a temporary coffee pavilion featuring two linked structures inspired by origami and pour-over drippers. The larger section serves as an enclosed space for coffee preparation, while the smaller cantilevered part extends outward, fostering social interaction. Measuring 8 by 3.5 meters, the pavilion's steel base has lifted corners that create an illusion of lightness. The interior walls are angled differently; a slight tilt in the service area facilitates barista movement, while a more pronounced curve on the customer side enhances the sense of space. Composed of brushed stainless steel, wood-grain aluminum, and beige textures, the pavilion includes a circular skylight that links the inside with the outdoors. Its frosted stainless steel exterior reflects winter street hues and glows at dusk, drawing inspiration from the cozy ambiance of a Japanese izakaya and emphasizing the bond between maker and guest. This project illustrates how temporary designs can provide rich sensory experiences within limited height and footprint constraints.
