Atelier Fomenta to debut rubber furniture collection at Milan Design Week 2026

Atelier Fomenta, a design studio based in Montréal, will unveil its 'Rubber Collection' at Milan Design Week 2026, marking the studio's first appearance in Europe. Established in 2022 by Julia Arvelo, Florence Barnabé, and Muriel Bentolila, the studio investigates the use of rubber in household items through innovative techniques inspired by leather crafting. The collection features tables with 'rubber tablecloths,' folded shelving, and cylindrical lamps, all handcrafted by cutting, folding, and riveting rubber sheets. Utilizing both natural rubber and synthetic neoprene, the studio chooses materials based on their flexibility and durability. The color palette is restricted to industrial options, influencing the collection's aesthetic. The exhibition will take place from April 20-26, 2026, at 'Convey by Simple Flair' on Via San Senatore 10 and 'Palma by Playinghouse' at Via Varesina 185 in the Certosa District. Atelier Fomenta previously participated in 'Pot-au-feu,' a group show by the Quebec collective Ensemble at the DesignTO Festival. The studio's work challenges traditional material perceptions, highlighting rubber's versatility and its capacity to defy conventional norms. Their Montréal location benefits from an affordable environment and a dynamic design culture, exemplified by groups like Ensemble.
