Atelier Carle's SONO Residence: Hemlock and Concrete on a Quebec Mountainside

architecture-design · 2026-05-07

Montreal-based Atelier Carle has completed SONO Residence, a 214-square-metre mountainside house in Wentworth-North, Quebec, finished in 2025. The design features a long, windowless board-formed concrete wall on the south side that acts as a snow and water retainer, while the north facade uses locally sourced hemlock for structure and cladding around large windows. The interior exposes hemlock beams, with a concrete floor echoing bedrock and green kitchen cabinets mirroring the landscape. The layout is described as an 'unconventional' origami-like array that creates visual and acoustic separation for the two friends who live there. Founder Alain Carle stated the design emerges from a 'colliding of perspectives' rather than conceptual imposition. The studio worked with local carpenter Taylor Lukian and structural engineer VCMa Engineering. Photography by Felix Michaud.
