Atelier 66 Preserves Community Oratory in New Chapel Design in Viana do Castelo

architecture-design · 2026-04-19

In 2020, Atelier 66 completed the Capilla de San Pedro, a 30-square-meter religious architecture project in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. The chapel was designed as part of an urban park development near the sea at Praia Norte. Initially, a modest glass-fronted oratory built by local residents was slated for demolition, but the architects chose to retain it due to its symbolic importance to the community. The structure honors San Pedro, the patron saint of fishermen, reflecting the area's maritime heritage. Led by Maria João Patronilho and Joana Ribeiro Martins, the project was curated by Susanna Moreira. Photographers Hugo Casanova and João Antunes documented the work. The design integrates the existing oratory into the new chapel, preserving its humble character while enhancing its function within the park setting.
