Atassi Foundation Preserves Syrian Art History Amid Diaspora
Established in 2015 by Mouna and Sadek Atassi, the Atassi Foundation is dedicated to cataloging, preserving, and promoting Syrian art from the 20th century and contemporary periods, particularly from abroad. Under the direction of Shireen Atassi, the foundation engages in various initiatives, including exhibitions, publications, and the Modern Art of Syria Archive (MASA). Significant exhibitions have featured "Syria: Into the Light" in Dubai (2017) and "Personal Revolutions" (2019). The foundation also produces The Journal and "HIWAR FATEH ADONIS" (2022) while digitizing archives of 20th-century artists. Collaborations with institutions such as the Aga Khan Museum and the British Museum emphasize themes of identity and displacement, with women artists like Randa Maddah and Khadija Baker playing crucial roles. Upcoming projects include archives of Mahmoud Hammad and two major exhibitions.
