Astronomers might have discovered a supermassive black hole situated more than 30,000 light-years away from the center of its galaxy, providing the first indication of 'wandering' black holes. The research, published on July 27 in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, originates from a tidal disruption event (TDE) known as TDE 2025abcr, which was initially detected in November 2025 in a galaxy located 750 million light-years from Earth. An AI algorithm developed by Robert Stein at the University of Maryland processed data from the Palomar Observatory. Subsequent observations validated the TDE's peculiar position. Researchers, including Kishore Patra from UC Santa Cruz, observed unexpected infrared emissions, implying a remnant from a satellite galaxy could be orbiting the black hole.
