Astronomers Capture Highest-Resolution Images of Sun's Whirlpools, Shedding Light on Solar Flares

Astronomers have captured the highest-resolution images of the sun's surface, revealing swirling whirlpools that could help explain solar flares and the corona's extreme heat. The observations, reported August 5 in Nature, provide the first direct confirmation of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHIs) on the photosphere. Using the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope atop Haleakalā volcano in Maui, Hawaii, the team, led by David Kuridze of the National Solar Observatory, spotted details down to 12 miles across, revealing dozens of vortices. The vortices, ranging from 16 to 106 miles wide, were compared with computer simulations and matched predictions from KHI theory. This breakthrough could help solve the mystery of why the corona is millions of degrees hotter than the photosphere. The swirling motion likely braids magnetic fields, causing energy buildups that lead to solar flares, which can disrupt satellites and power grids on Earth. The findings also suggest the instability may transfer energy to smaller scales, heating the corona. Researchers hope this will lead to a better understanding of energy transfer from the sun's interior to its surface and beyond.
