Astaka Kota Selera Relocated for Fort Cornwallis Moat Restoration

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Astaka Kota Selera, a food court in George Town, Penang, has been relocated as part of the North Seafront Improvement Programme. Designed by EA Architects, the project addresses the archaeological necessity of reinstating the Western Moat of Fort Cornwallis, which required moving the original food court that sat atop the moat's alignment. The 13,300 ft² commercial architecture project was completed in 2025, led by Liou Hung Woei and Lui Sy Ying. The intervention reconciles colonial heritage preservation with contemporary street food culture.
