Associazione Genesi becomes Italy's first itinerant contemporary art museum

institutional · 2026-04-26

Founded in 2020 by Letizia Moratti, the Associazione Genesi has evolved from a collection into Italy's first itinerant contemporary art museum. Over five years, the Genesi Collection grew from 35 to 75 works by artists such as Shirin Neshat, Doris Salcedo, and Alfredo Jaar, focusing on human rights and environmental issues. The 'Progetto Genesi. Arte e Diritti Umani' ran from 2021 to 2024 across multiple Italian cities and at the UN in Geneva. In 2025, the association launches a new exhibition program including monographic shows on Louise Nevelson (Bologna, Palazzo Fava, May 30–July 20, 2025) and Fabio Mauri (Milan, Triennale, December 3, 2025–February 15, 2026), curated by Ilaria Bernardi. The museum will also support young Italian artists, commissioning works from Irene Dionisio for a project with Fondazione Gariwo. A monograph series with Silvana Editoriale begins with a volume on Nevelson. Educational activities include partnerships with Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Fondazione Gariwo, and RFK Human Rights Italia, as well as volunteer involvement from FAI groups.
