Asper family halts funding for Canadian Museum for Human Rights over Palestine exhibit

Gail Asper, the daughter of Izzy Asper, the founder of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR), declared that her family will cease financial support for the museum due to the exhibition 'Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present,' which will run until 30 November 2028. In a CBC Radio interview on 27 July, she expressed her disappointment with the exhibition for its lack of context and conveyed feelings of betrayal towards the museum's management. The Asper Foundation contributed over C$23 million (approximately $16.3 million) for the museum's construction, while Gail Asper personally donated C$1.4 million (around $1 million) for exhibits. Following 2023, the foundation has stopped funding the annual gala and has also paused a C$50,000 ($35,500) donation for the Holocaust exhibit. A CMHR representative confirmed that no funds have been received since 2023. Additionally, on 29 July, a union protested against pressure related to the Nakba exhibition.
