ASICS and VANDYTHEPINK Release GEL-KAYANO 12.1 Inspired by Korean Childhood Memories

ASICS has partnered with Korean designer Junghoon Vandy Son's brand VANDYTHEPINK for a new GEL-KAYANO 12.1 collaboration, released globally on 14th August 2026. The sneaker draws on Son's childhood memories in Korea, particularly the nostalgic concept of 'Aiseu-Keki'—frozen treats sold by neighborhood vendors. The design incorporates hidden Korean cultural references, including Hangul phrases, into the footwear and packaging, rather than using overt graphics. Two colorways are offered: Vanilla, with a wider global release, and Chocolate, limited and exclusive to VANDYTHEPINK's channels, both priced at $195. Son, who spent his first 17 years in Korea before moving to the US, blends Korean memories with American streetwear aesthetics. The release coincides with a surge of international interest in Korean culture: Frieze Seoul is set to run from 2nd–5th September at COEX, featuring over 125 galleries from 30 countries, and the British Museum will open 'Korea' on 1st October, its first major Korean art exhibition in over 40 years, showcasing works from the late Samsung chairman Lee Kun-Hee's collection. VANDYTHEPINK, founded by Son, specializes in transforming nostalgia into collectible objects across fashion and accessories.
