Asian Film Archive's State of Motion exhibition explores memory and time through moving image works
From January 10 to February 2, the Asian Film Archive held its annual exhibition series, State of Motion, showcasing the 2020 edition titled Rushes of Time across two locations in Singapore. Curated by Cheong Kah Kit, Selene Yap, and Tan Guo-Liang, the exhibition featured ten pieces that delve into themes of time, memory, and moving images. Tada Hengsapkul's You lead me down, to the ocean (2018) juxtaposes military tanks with letters from the Vietnam War, highlighting Cold War impacts. At the National Archives, Koh Nguang How examined Singapore's performance art history. Depot Lane displayed Pat Toh's Topography of Breath (2020) and Sonya Lacey's Edit, cuttings (2018). Sriwhana Spong's Halberd Head… (2008) utilized a pinhole camera to challenge archival norms through the depiction of a Javanese spearhead.
