Asian Biennials 2017: Yokohama Triennale, Shenzhen Biennale, Kuala Lumpur Biennale
The 2017 Yokohama Triennale, titled 'Islands, Constellations & Galapagos,' is curated by Miki Akiko and addresses themes of encounter, isolation, and global uncertainty. It features international artists including Ai Weiwei, Paola Pivi, Maurizio Cattelan, Olafur Eliasson, Jenny Holzer, and Rob Pruitt. The exhibition spans four venues: Yokohama Museum of Art, Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, the underground of Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall, and Free Shuttle Bus and Minato Mirai Station. The second Yichuan Biennale, curated by Italian Marco Scotini, will run from June to September 2018 at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Yichuan, covering 15,000 sqm. The 2017 Shenzhen Biennale, titled 'Cities, Grow in Difference' and curated by architect Meng Yan, opens December 15, focusing on China's economic expansion and urban homogenization. Kuala Lumpur hosts its first Biennale from November 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018, titled 'Beloved,' with sections on love for nature, heritage, animals, ancestors, and humanity. It involves venues such as KLCC, Publika, National Planetarium, and National Blood Centre, featuring about 100 artists from Malaysia, Japan, China, India, and South Korea.
