Asian Art Museum to Open First Exhibition on West Asian Diaspora Rave Culture
The Asian Art Museum in San Francisco is set to unveil 'Rave into the Future: Art in Motion,' marking the first exhibition that celebrates the collective joy and resilience experienced on the dancefloors of West Asian diaspora communities. Scheduled to open on October 24, 2025, in the Akiko Yamazaki and Jerry Yang Pavilion, the exhibition showcases artists from the West Asia diaspora residing in the United States and Europe. Drawing inspiration from contemporary rave culture in West Asia, it emphasizes the dance floor as a venue for community, belonging, and empowered resistance. Assistant Curator Naz Cuguoğlu, who relocated from Türkiye to the US, aims to counter Western narratives that often depict West Asia through an Orientalist lens, instead fostering solidarity through joy and laughter. The exhibition features a multimedia sculpture by Oakland-based Arab Persian American artist Sahar Khoury, which includes a functional DJ deck activated by local DJs during the exhibition's duration.
